Three posts in one week!! Plus, a banner!!!This has to be a record for me. I am working from home this week so I am finding more time. Just clocking in after 9:00 makes my day so much more do-able.
I never reported back on how the kids did on portfolio night....it was beyond AMAZING!! I may gripe and complain about the amount of homework but I have to say that I am just impressed with each and every one of them.
Faith's writing is just awesome! For a 1st grader she is doing so well. I always love to read their journaling. Sometimes it is funny, sometimes it is embarrassing and sometimes it's just pure imagination. Whatever it is it's always fun! She is doing really well all the way around. She even read me a book. I love that she reads to me. She is the only that does on a weekly basis. She would rather read to me at bedtime than me read to her.
Trevor floored me this year. Usually there is lots of paper and little writing. I got full stories this year and for the most part I could understand them. His writing was great! His spelling very much improved and his imagination just soars. He's enthusiastic regardless what he is doing and for the first time I could read it loud and clear in his writing!!! I love that. His teacher and I had a nice talk about his enthusiasm and she was really happy with the improvements that he has made. Now if we could just get him to slow down a bit so he could make those sounds right and get his spelling down I would be thrilled. It is something he will battle with. We (the Teacher, Ray and I) have fought long and hard for those speech therapy lessons to continue but they just aren't going to budge. He does great one on one but not in any other setting and the "school's rule" is that he does it in a one on one setting and he has to learn to apply it else where. I don't agree but I have run out of avenues.
Brycen is doing good also. He does better than he lets on most of the time. The teachers have seen huge improvements. While I am very impressed with his artistic stuff and his scientfic knowledge (he blows me away with this one) and his comprehension of a book that has been read to him, I saw very little writing. I expected this though. He hates to write and you can see it in his portfolio. They are really concentrating on it this year. It's like forcing a rock to bleed. It's so hard. He hates it. He gets frustrated and stressed. It is a very large uphill battle and he is resisting the entire way. He had ONE journal entry since the beginning of school. Although, it was very well written, in his best handwriting, it was only one. I encouraged him to do much more and even resorted to bribing him with a video game if I see more at the next portfolio at the end of the year.
All in all it was a really good night. I got there at 3:00 and we didn't even leave until 6:15. It was a long afternoon but worth every single minute of it!!!
BTW, next time any of you see Brycen, ask him about the mumification of a cucumber. I was so impressed. I still smile just thinking of it. It's very cool. He showed me the actual cucumber. So neat.
